Start with the battery that is already in the car. Its label carries the amp-hour (Ah) rating, the cold cranking amps (CCA), the size code and the terminal layout. If the label has faded, your owner's manual lists the same numbers. Bring the old battery — or a clear photo of its label — to the shop and we'll match it to the right equivalent from the brands we stock.

Lead acid is the classic starting battery — it delivers a strong, short burst of power to crank an engine and it is the most economical option. Deep cycle batteries are built to be discharged and recharged again and again, which makes them the right choice for UPS systems and solar storage. Lithium and LiFePO4 are the newer generation: lighter for the same capacity, more cycles, far less maintenance, at a higher upfront cost. For backup duty you want a deep cycle battery, not a standard automotive one. Automotive batteries are made for short bursts of current; UPS batteries are made to be drained slowly and recharged daily. The capacity you need depends on the load you want to run and for how long — tell us what you are powering and we'll work out the size with you.

You can, but it won't last. Being discharged deeply and repeatedly is exactly what an automotive battery is not built for, so it usually gives up far sooner than a deep cycle battery of the same size. It looks like the cheaper option on day one — and rarely is by the end.

It depends on your budget and how much storage you need. Deep cycle lead acid is the economical route and still powers a lot of home solar systems. Lithium and LiFePO4 cost more upfront but give you more usable capacity, many more charge and discharge cycles, and almost no maintenance. Bring it in — a weak battery is not always a finished battery. A loose or corroded terminal, a charging problem, or a battery that simply needs a proper charge can feel exactly the same from the driver's seat. We'll check it before you spend money on a replacement.

Price comes down to three things: the type (lead acid, deep cycle, lithium or LiFePO4), the capacity in Ah, and the brand. Because battery prices move, we would rather quote you a current figure than a stale one — call the shop with your vehicle model, your UPS load or your solar setup and we'll give you the exact price for the right battery.

The warranty comes from the battery brand, and its length varies from brand to brand and model to model. Every battery we sell is supplied with its own warranty card, and we'll tell you the exact terms that apply to the one you are buying. Keep the receipt and the card somewhere safe.

Bring it back to the shop with the receipt and the warranty card. We'll test the battery and check the connections so we can tell whether it is a battery fault or a charging problem elsewhere in the vehicle. If it is a genuine warranty case, we'll guide you through the brand's claim process.

Keep the terminals clean and tight, make sure the battery is properly clamped so vibration can't damage it, and have your alternator or charger checked if the battery keeps going flat. Never leave a battery sitting discharged for weeks — recharge it as soon as you can. With UPS and solar batteries, avoid draining them below the depth of discharge the manufacturer recommends.
